LA28 Reveals Vibrant Visual Identity Drawing from California's Superbloom Phenomenon
The organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games has unveiled a striking visual system rooted in California's rare wildflower spectacle
LA28 organizers have introduced their comprehensive visual identity system for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games, showcasing an audacious chromatic approach that channels the region's natural splendor.
This cohesive design language will permeate the entire Games ecosystem, from accreditation badges and staff apparel to wayfinding systems, competition venues, and the Olympic Village infrastructure.
Unveiled Monday, the creative direction draws inspiration from California's superbloom phenomenon—a cyclical botanical event occurring approximately once per decade during spring months, transforming the landscape into a kaleidoscopic tapestry of native wildflowers spanning hillsides, valleys, and arid regions.
The LA28 creative team conducted extensive research into previous Olympic and Paralympic visual identities, with particular attention to the 1984 Los Angeles Games, extracting design principles that informed their contemporary interpretation.
The vibrant orange hues of the Bird of Paradise—Los Angeles' designated municipal flower—anchor the primary color palette, while the complete Superbloom concept encompasses 13 distinct botanical specimens. The design framework employs a rigorous grid system, with strategic reduction of visual complexity near athletic competition zones to preserve competitor concentration.
"Our objective was to capture the essence of Los Angeles through design," stated Geoff Engelhardt, LA28's head of brand design. "This city represents a unique convergence of creative industries, positioned at the nexus of athletic excellence and entertainment culture. The 2028 Games will serve as a global gathering point within this distinctive environment."
Monday evening at Intuit Dome—the designated basketball venue for 2028—attendees at the Los Angeles Clippers match experienced the inaugural public presentation, with the outdoor plaza's expansive digital display showcasing the LA28 visual system. An accompanying video presentation inside the arena provided comprehensive details of the design unveiling.
