UK Airport Implements Steep Drop-Off Fee Increase to Combat Terminal Congestion
Stansted introduces revised pricing structure targeting short-stay vehicle traffic at passenger terminals
Stansted Airport has rolled out a revised fee structure for curbside passenger drop-offs, representing a notable escalation in terminal access costs.
The new tiered pricing model charges £10 for stays under 15 minutes and £28 for those extending beyond that threshold—a £3 increase from the previous rate schedule.
Vehicles remaining in the terminal forecourt beyond 30 minutes trigger a £100 Parking Charge Notice, though this penalty drops to £60 when paid within a two-week window.
Drivers attempting to circumvent the system by re-entering within 30 minutes of departure face the full £28 charge regardless of dwell time.
Blue Badge holders remain exempt from all charges under the updated policy.
Airport officials characterized the pricing adjustment as a traffic management strategy designed to "manage congestion at the terminal and reduce 'kiss and fly' traffic, which is a major contributor to road congestion around the airport".

The facility operates under planning conditions mandating that public transport account for at least 50 percent of passenger arrivals—a requirement that escalates to 54 percent as throughput increases.
Alternative access options include a complimentary park-and-ride service located away from the main terminal, alongside discounted rates for residents within a 10-mile radius of the airport perimeter.
The pricing revision aligns Stansted with a broader industry trend toward higher drop-off fees across UK aviation hubs.
Heathrow implemented a similar increase last December, raising its charge from £6 to £7 while imposing a strict 10-minute maximum before penalties apply.
That facility's fee structure has climbed 40 percent since its introduction four years ago, with airport representatives citing competitive parity with peer airports as justification.
Heathrow's stated rationale centers on aligning its pricing with comparable international gateway facilities.
Gatwick Airport has positioned itself at the premium end of the market with a £10 drop-off charge, establishing the highest rate among UK airports for terminal forecourt access.
