David Adams, director of the South of England estate agency, marks the firm's 200-year milestone, tracing its evolution from its origins in pig auctioneering to becoming a leading independent property specialist.

A family-run property firm employing 175 professionals throughout southern England has reached a remarkable achievement in the industry – two centuries of uninterrupted operation.

Henry Adams, whose origins date to 1826 in the affluent market town of Chichester, has evolved into a comprehensive property services provider. The firm's portfolio spans residential sales and lettings, commercial real estate, strategic planning consultancy, land development advisory, vacation property management, and auction services.

Wyatt & Son of Chichester

The enterprise launched as Wyatt & Son, initially facilitating livestock transactions including swine sales when Chichester maintained a thriving municipal marketplace serviced by regional agricultural producers. Edward Wyatt, the founding principal who operated his own farming enterprise, subsequently expanded into agricultural asset valuation, auction management, and professional surveying services.

Henry Adams

The transformation toward its current identity began when chartered surveyor and licensed auctioneer Henry Adams entered the organization in 1952.

Adams ascended to senior partnership, collaborating with Simon Lush from 1952 through 1990. During the 1980s, the partnership maintained a temporary affiliation with Prudential's real estate division before the partners rebranded the operation as Henry Adams in 1991.

Half a billion sales pipeline

The company currently operates 16 branch locations spanning Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire, managing an annual property transaction portfolio valued at approximately £500 million.

"Our trajectory from agricultural valuation specialists to today's integrated property services firm demonstrates continuous adaptation across successive generations," explains current managing director David Adams (main image), son of the late Henry Adams, who stepped down from active management in 2022.

"Yet the foundational principles established during the Georgian period – professional dedication, client respect, collaborative excellence, and technical expertise – remain as central to our operations today as they were nearly two hundred years ago."
