Speed skating is, on paper, the most accessible Winter Olympics sport. Most people have at least attempted a lap of their local ice rink on skates, and some have even made it the whole way without falling over.
This varies as an individual discipline which pits the athlete against the clock, a team pursuit which sees athletes from each country working together or as a mass start which sees all athletes compete at the same time. The latter can get messy.
Milano Cortina will see 14 events take place. The women will compete in the 500m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, the mass start and the team pursuit. The men will compete in the 500m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m, the mass start and the team pursuit.
At Milano Cortina 2026, the biggest name to know is Jordan Stolz, the American who has dominated the 500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m on the World Cup circuit and arrives as a top favourite for multiple golds, while the Dutch, especially Jutta Leerdam in the women’s 1000 m and strong contenders in the longer distances like Stijn van de Bunt, will push for medals, and races like the mass start and team pursuit always have the potential for tactical upsets.
As Winter Olympic sports go, this is one of the easiest ones to pick up. Simply whoever is fastest wins. There’s a reason it’s one of the older Olympic sports, having been introduced in 1924 and developed in the 1600s.
Anyway, let’s get to the real question you want to know: where to watch Winter Olympics Speed Skating live streams online from anywhere, potentially for FREE.
