By Aaliyan MohammedShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Baltimore Orioles have officially finalized their five-year deal with Pete Alonso worth a reported $155 million. For the first time in seven seasons, he won't be on the New York Mets' Opening Day roster.
Alonso, who became the Mets' all-time home run leader last season, was a beloved franchise figure, and he'll be missed in The Big Apple. The Mets posted a tribute video for Alonso, accompanied by the message "Thanks for everything, Pete."
Alonso hit 264 home runs in his career with the Mets. In 2024, he hit 34 home runs and had a .788 OPS, but was unable to find a long-term deal the following offseason. The Mets agreed to bring him back on the two-year deal he opted out of this offseason.
...His five-year deal with the Orioles gives him the highest average annual value in Orioles history. It is the second-biggest commitment ever made by the Orioles. Alonso's deal has a full no-trade clause, according to MLB.com's Jake Rill. The Orioles missed the postseason this year, and believe that adding Alonso can help them get back to playing October baseball.
As for the Mets, they must now try to replace Alonso's production. He hit 38 home runs last season and collected 126 RBIs. He had an .871 OPS and led the National League in doubles. He played in all 162 games for the second consecutive season.
