Estate agents have been left trying to pick up the pieces after a major conveyancing firm shut down.
PM Law, which ran offices in Yorkshire, Cumbria, Berkshire, Derbyshire and Kent, suddenly closed the doors last week leaving staff and clients in limbo.
And the Solicitors Regulation Authority stepped in to intervene and launch an investigation.
Under an intervention, the SRA takes possession of all documents and papers held by the firm, as well as all its money (including clients’ cash).
These matters can be stressful enough without the added complication of your solicitor’s firm closing during the process.”
Sarah Rapson, CEO, SRA
Sarah Rapson, CEO at the SRA, said: “We have acted quickly and decisively to protect the interests of clients.
“Many of those involved are buying and selling a house or dealing with personal injury claims. These matters can be stressful enough without the added complication of your solicitor’s firm closing during the process.”
A notice on PM Law’s website reads: “The PM Law Group has been closed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Gordons LLP have been instructed by the SRA to assist with the closure.
“It is important to note that Gordons LLP have not taken over any of the matters previously dealt with by PM Law.”
Shock closurePM Law employed more than 600 people and traded under names including Proddow Mackay, Butterworths Solicitors, WB Pennine Solicitors and Angela Viney Conveyancing Services.
The Neg reported last week on the situation with Butterworths, which had four branches in Cumbria.
Mark Buchanan Property Group has had to issue client guidance after the shock closure of Butterworths left sales and purchases unable to progress.
